Northern Wisconsin has some absolutely beautiful golf courses. Big Fish in Hayward continues to be one of my favorites and I also really enjoy places like Nemadji, Apostle Highlands, and even 9-hole Poplar Golf Course has a fun charm to it.

Earlier this summer I had the opportunity to check out another one of Northern Wisconsin's 18-hole courses, and while it is a little out of the way from the region's larger towns, it is 100% worth the trip!

This course is a well-maintained hidden gem that really immerses you in the rugged wilderness of Northern Wisconsin in a way that none of the other courses I mentioned above do.

I made the roughly 1.5-hour drive from the Twin Ports area to the Cable area earlier this summer to check out a new course I had never played before.

Nestled in the wilderness not far from Lake Namekagon is Lakewoods Forest Ridges Golf Course, about 10 miles east of Cable on County Highway M. When I talk about this course feeling like it is out in the wilderness, there isn't much for development in the area, and I even lost cell phone coverage during part of my round, but I say that in a positive way. It's refreshing being able to golf and disconnect from anyone looking to bug you.

While the course isn't right in or near a town, don't let that fool you into thinking it is a low-bar course. It is well-maintained, offers plenty of challenge, and is absolutely ruggedly beautiful.

Lined by pine, oak, and tamarack trees and dotted with ponds and wetlands, this course also has a lot of elevation changes, making terrain a consideration for your game when playing here.

From the tips, the course plays 6,062 yards, with 13 of the 18 holes over 300 yards long and the longest hole playing 494 yards from the furthest-back tees.

While the whole course is a lot of fun (and plenty challenging) to play, a couple of holes that really stand out to me include the par-3 7th hole, which plays (way) down from an elevated tee box on top of a hill, across a wetland area that goes 183 yards from the back tees to the green.  After (hopefully) sticking your tee shot on the green, you have to travel across the wetland on a boardwalk to finish the hole.

The other that really stood out to me most was the 181-yard, par-3 13th hole, where you play over a sizable tree-lined pond that just looks absolutely beautiful.

If you're looking for a new golf adventure, Lakewoods Forest Ridges Golf Course is absolutely worth the trip! If you want to make it a real trip and spend some time in the area, the course is owned by Lakewoods Resort, which is near the course on Lake Namekagon.

I didn't check out the resort on my day trip to the course, but the area is beautiful, and I would definitely consider a longer trip out that way sometime!
