A Piece of Civil War History Once Sat Abandoned Right Here in Rockford
I am one of the biggest history lovers you'll ever meet, and learning new facts, especially about Rockford right now, has grown quite fun for me.
Rockford, Illinois has a lot of history to entertain people like me, but I swear something new and interesting always comes up when I least expect it.
I stumbled across a YouTube video that stunned me, mainly because it took me way too long to find out about it.
Abandoned Civil War Hospital in Rockford, Illinois
Located on 1260 N. Main Street in Rockford was a house that was used as a literal Civil War Hospital for Camp Fuller.
Information on the place is very limited, but it is believed to have been built in 1842 when President Lincoln called for more volunteers to aid in the war.

The coolest fact I learned about this place? Allegedly, urns were placed on a veranda toward the back of the house. When they were lit, it was a sign that it was safe to bring escaped slaves up from the Rock River, as a place for them to stay as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
Take a look at what the outside looked like!
In 2017, the city of Rockford decided to have the house torn down after being in too poor of condition to save.
While I do completely understand and respect the city's choice, I personally wish I could have at least seen it once. Or that had been in good enough condition to save and be made into a museum. But that's just me because I love history and museums, haha!
