Though it might be hard to believe, a new study says that Illinois is the third least expensive state in which to operate a vehicle. The report, from bankrate.com, took into account the average spending on repairs, insurance, and gasoline. The Tribune reports:

Illinois' drivers spend on average $343 a year in repairs, $805 in insurance and $852 in gasoline, for a grand total of about $2,000 in yearly costs, which puts Illinois just below Ohio and Iowa, named the cheapest state at $1,942.

I'm not sure how the gasoline costs makes sense. $852 a year in fuel equates to about $71 per month, which is about the cost to "fill 'er up" once. Are most people out there able to make it on a tank of gas for an entire month? Somehow I doubt that's the case.

Wyoming took the crown for most expensive state to operate a vehicle, mostly because the state if full of wide-open spaces and you need to drive forever to get anywhere. Wisconsin came in at #5 while Indiana was toward the middle of the pack.
