I apologize if the photo gives away the city in Illinois that boasts one of the most annually expensive commutes. I'm sure that if you hadn't seen the photo you would have been shouting guesses like New Milford, Byron, Leaf River, or Caledonia.

But, those would be bad guesses, because those cities cleaned their massive traffic problems years ago.

An Auto Insurance Comparison Website Analyzed Cities Coast-To-Coast For The Most and Least Expensive Commutes, Along With Commute Times

That website, AutoInsurance.org, points out that the average American spends a lot of time, money, and energy on commuting, affecting personal time. Although commute costs vary from state to state and city to city, many Americans lose money on their commute due to their location.

They also found that while it's not number one on the list of the most expensive city commutes, Chicago is definitely in the top ten.

The Cost Of Commuting In Chicago Works Out To Roughly $32 Per Day

Here's what AutoInsurance.org had to say about the price tag for getting yourself to work in Chicago:

  • Annual average commute cost: $8,033
  • Average travel time to work: 35 minutes
  • Weekly average hours worked: 39
  • Median workers’ yearly salary: $54,316

Chicago is in the #10 spot, and these are the nine cities that will cost you more as a commuter:

  • Fremont, California - $15,005 - 36.4 minutes
  • San Francisco, California - $13,015 - 34.7 minutes
  • Jersey City, New Jersey - $10,602 - 37.8 minutes
  • Arlington, Virginia - $10,385 - 29.7 minutes
  • New York, New York - $10,275 - 41.7 minutes
  • San Jose, California - $9,813 - 31.7 minutes
  • Seattle, Washington - $9,790 - 28.4 minutes
  • Irvine, California - $9,526 - 24.0 minutes
