You could soon add driver's licenses to the list of things going digital.

Right now, the state of Illinois is exploring whether to go digital with licesnses accessed through a smartphone app. According to the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers, Secretary of State Jesse White's office has announced that it's looking for a company to help determine whether the state should allow the cellphone-based licenses:

The electronic license would contain the same information found on current licenses, so it could be used during traffic stops or whenever a driver's license is required as a form of identification, such as at the airport.

Among the answers being sought by White's office are the pricing structure used by a vendor and the ability of police to access verification information. Companies are tentatively scheduled to present their answers to the state in February.

The announcement by White's office follows formation of a special committee by Illinois lawmakers earlier this year to look into digital driver's licenses.

Iowa is already in the midst of studying the practice and its implications for police and the public. Delaware hopes to have its program up and running in 2016.
