Looking back to being in high school, I think I went to the homecoming dance 3 out of 4 years...but I have little to no memory of those occasions. Not because of underage drinking or substance abuse, but because they obviously weren't that memorable.

Going to the homecoming football game and the dance the next night was just something you were supposed to do at that age (it's still true today for the most part), but I had no idea why, or where the concept even started.

Homecoming Traditions Are A Little Over 100 Years Old

The history of homecoming goes back to the late 19th century as a way for colleges to welcome back alumni. Schools wanted to encourage graduates to return for a football game or special events, fostering school spirit and community. The University of Missouri often claims to have hosted the first modern homecoming in 1911, featuring a football game, parade, and alumni festivities. Other early contenders include Baylor University and our own University of Illinois.

While originally a college tradition, homecoming eventually spread to high schools in the 1920s and 1930s. High schools adapted the tradition to celebrate their student body, including:

  • The Homecoming dance: Often held on the night of the football game or the weekend after
  • Parade: Featuring floats, marching bands, and community participation
  • Homecoming court: Students are selected as king, queen, and other roles to represent school spirit.

The Rockford BBB Has Issued A Warning That Scammers And Shady Businesses Are Ready To Exploit Homecoming Season This Year

Dennis Horton, Executive Director of the Rockford Regional Office of the Better Business Bureau (BBB):

Homecoming should be a time of celebration, not regret. Unfortunately, the rush to find the perfect outfit, book a limousine, or snag last-minute deals can lead to costly mistakes. Scammers know this, and they’re counting on it. From fake websites selling dresses and accessories to unreliable limo services that vanish after payment, the BBB is seeing a rise in deceptive practices targeting teens and families during this season.

Here's What You, Your Kids, Or Your Grandchildren Need To Be On The Lookout For

According to the Rockford BBB, these are 2025's top homecoming scam risks:

Limo Letdowns: Some companies promise luxury transportation but fail to show up or
deliver subpar service. Always verify credentials, read reviews, and confirm details in writing.

Counterfeit Clothing Sites: Social media ads may lead to fraudulent websites offering
designer dresses at unbelievable prices. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Pop-Up Retailers: Temporary vendors may sell low-quality or knockoff items with no return policy. Stick with trusted retailers and check BBB ratings.
