How Do Drivers Run Into Stationary Objects?

I have never understood how people run into stationary objects. They aren't jumping in your way. You have a steering wheel to turn out of the way. There are breaks on a car to stop. It just doesn't make sense to me and it happens all the time, especially in Illinois. I will give drivers a couple of valid excuses. First is mechanical failure like the breaks not working. The other is slippery road surface with ice. Those are a small percentage of the incidents.

Why Does The Bridge Keep Getting Hit?

Most of the accidents were caused by trucks. The drivers don't pay attention to the signs. Most of those bigger vehicles are too tall for the bridge.

According to jg-tc.com,

The latest incident involved an 11-foot tall U-Haul truck traveling east on Robert Parker Coffin Road, which hit the covered bridge Saturday morning, officials said. The historic bridge’s roof rises up to a height of 8 feet 6 inches — and signage for “at least” two blocks makes the bridge’s clearance quite clear, according to Village Manager Greg Jackson.
