The high water on the Mississippi River is soon going to recede.

The Mississippi is above flood stage most of the way from Rock Island to East St. Louis, with water coming in from rainstorms in Northwest Illinois and as far up as Wisconsin and Minnesota, says National Weather Service meteorologist John Haase in the Quad Cities.

“It’s taking into account all the water that’s routed from all the tributary rivers. Of course some of that does soak into the ground. The good news is, at least for the foreseeable future, I really don’t see any heavy rains over the next 10 days, so the river will continue to fall,” he said.

There has been no significant damage to property during this surge on the Mississippi, but locks and dams from 16 (Rock Island) to 22 (just south of I-72) have been closed to navigation. Also, the U.S. 54 bridge at Pike County is closed, and the eastbound U.S. 24 bridge at Quincy is closed, with traffic sharing the westbound bridge.
