Early in the morning on Thursday, December 5 a fire broke out at the Great Oaks Apartment complex on Linden Rd. in Rockford. The blaze began in the apartment of 60-year-old Tamera Adams who was sleeping at the time, and tragically, Tamera was killed by smoke inhalation.

The images from the scene were heartbreaking, and right after we broke the news of the fire we began receiving tons of messages asking how people can help the victims.

All of the Great Oaks residents that were living in the 32-unit building that caught fire have had to find a new place to live, and six of the apartments, and all of their contents, were completely destroyed according to the Rockford Register Star.

The entire situation is beyond tragic, but what really breaks my heart is the fact that Tamera Adams' family is now struggling to come to terms with such an awful tragedy, but also the financial burden that comes with laying their beloved family member to rest.

If you feel the calling to help, a GoFundMe has been set up to help fund the funeral expenses for Tamera Adams as her family " have been unable to find any means to accommodate her burial and funeral expenses."

As for helping the rest of the Great Oaks fire victims that have literally been left with nothing, WIFR says the Machesney Park, Loves Park, and Rockford East State Street Sherwin Williams locations are currently collecting supply and monetary donations for the victims.
