I just finished up reading a piece at WorldAtlas.com entitled "The Best Small Town In Every US State," and I've got to admit that I'm totally unsurprised by the Illinois small town that they rated as being the best in our state.

Why? Well, because this particular small town has been on the receiving end of all sorts of titles and praise over the years and it shows no signs of slowing down its collection of kudos and compliments.

Here's a sample of some of the recognition this northwest Illinois town has gotten and could display in the city's trophy case:

  • Travel + Leisure: Most Beautiful Small Town (ranked #18 nationally)
  • Impulcity.com: Ranked #15 for Most Beautiful Cities
  • World Atlas: Illinois' Most Beautiful Small Town
  • Thrillist: #1 Must-Visit Illinois Town
  • Mixbook.com: Most Christmassy Town in Illinois
  • Afar.com: Most Charming Small Town/Destination in Illinois
  • TripAdvisor: Travelers' Choice/Local Inns In Top 1%

You've probably already figured out which Illinois town we're talking about.

Obviously, The Small Town (around 3,200 residents) That Draws The Big Accolades Is Galena

But before we get into what WorldAtlas.com had to say about why Galena is our state's best small town, here are the best small towns they chose in 3 of Illinois' neighboring states:

Wisconsin: New Glarus "This vibrant town in Wisconsin looks like it is straight out of a mountain in Switzerland. Steeped in alpine architecture and Swiss heritage, New Glarus has garnered the nickname “America’s Little Switzerland.” Come and explore the many traditional destinations that will make you feel like you're in a different country."

Iowa: Winterset "Winterset is a hub of cultural and artistic appeal nestled in Iowa. Winterset is known for its stunning covered bridges rather than galleries and theaters. Intertwined with the town’s quaint vibe, these bridges are a blast of culture and local heritage."

Indiana: Nashville "Nashville is an artistic jewel in Indiana that exudes creativity, and it is full of cultural attractions. Best known as the center of the Brown County Art Colony, this town of 800 is full of life around every corner. Galleries, museums, theatres, and fine restaurants create a picturesque environment with tons of ways to enjoy yourself."

Here In Illinois, It's Galena...Because Why Not? They've Won Every Other Award

When it comes to the best in small town Illinois, there's Galena...and everywhere else follows behind.

WorldAtlas.com:

Galena is a historic town exuding regal charm. Guests find themselves walking between opulent mansions and cobblestone streets similar to those from history books. Between the array of sights, some stand out with an intriguing story or sight to share. For example, the Old Market House, Washburne House, and Grant Park will take you on a tour through the town’s past. From being the largest steamboat hub in the region to the home of Ulysses S. Grant, these stories will grasp anyone’s attention.
