Look, there are plenty of things in life that can make us feel stupid. Trying to assemble furniture without reading the instructions comes to mind. So does attempting to understand your teenager's latest slang.
But absolutely nothing does it quite as effectively as installing and using a child safety car seat.
My kids are grown now, but I still have flashbacks to those days of wondering whether I had actually installed the thing correctly, and perhaps more importantly, whether the car seat we chose was actually up to the job.
That's why a new recall involving nearly 23,000 infant car seats is likely to get the attention of plenty of parents and grandparents. And it should.
23,000 Child Safety Car Seats Have Been Recalled By The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Evenflo is recalling 22,981 Revolve180 LiteMax NXT infant car seats and certain travel systems because a recline indicator on the seats may be improperly calibrated. In other words, the indicator could tell a parent the seat was positioned correctly when it was actually sitting too upright.
And that's not just a matter of a parent getting a little frustrated with the installation instructions. A government crash test found that an affected seat could fail to meet federal safety standards, potentially increasing the risk of injury to a child in a crash. No injuries have been reported in connection with the recall.
The recall involves Revolve180 LiteMax NXT seats manufactured before April 1st, 2025. Some were sold individually, while others were included with travel systems.
Here's What To Do If You've Got One
First, check the model number and manufacture date on the label on the seat base. Evenflo says a repair kit is being developed, and interim notification letters are expected to begin going out September 1st. Owners should register their seats with Evenflo so they'll receive information about the free remedy when it's available.
Because when it comes to protecting a kid in a moving vehicle, there's really no room for the words, “Well, I think I installed it right.” Even though I recall saying exactly that years ago.
And if you've ever installed one of these things, you know exactly what I mean.
