Civil War Statue Returning To Downtown Rockford
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — A 114-year-old Civil War statue will be returned to downtown Rockford after decades at another location.
The Rockford Register Star reports the statue of a Civil War soldier will be restored and moved to Veterans Memorial Hall.
It was bought in 1900 by Winnebago County to decorate the entrance to a courthouse, which was demolished in 1967. The statue was stored for 17 years before being placed atop a pedestal at a street intersection, where it has stood for 30 years.
Scott Lewandowski is manager of the county-owned Memorial Hall. He says it'll cost $130,000 to restore and relocate the zinc statue.
Officials first are trying to find a grave for the skull of a Union soldier, which is in a 12-inch-square box beneath the monument.
