Senator Jim Oberweis is responsible for getting the speed limit in Illinois up to 70. He wants to go faster.

The state senator from Aurora has a little bit of a lead foot himself. He reportedly racked up 11 speeding tickets in a 24 year span. Oberweis says that 75 will be as far as he'll push.

The smart place to put the limit is at the 85th percentile of how fast traffic moves, and 75 mph is just right.

The bill would raise the limit to 75 on I-355, I-80 and every interstate west of I-355 and south of I-80. That's a roundabout way of saying everywhere except Chicago and it's suburbs.

This makes total sense. If you've driven anywhere in Illinois recently you know that the average speed is somewhere around 75. If you go 65 or 70 you're almost in danger.

It will be interesting to see what the police let you get away with if this passes. Will 82 be the new 72? We'll have to wait and find out.
