You may have seen or read recently that if you're looking for the cheapest prices on groceries that you could possibly find, you should look no further than that big red building with a bullseye as a logo, Target.

That may very well be true, depending on where you live.

A recent study of grocery store pricing by NetCredit.com did determine that Target is the most affordable place for groceries...but only in 15 states, not including the state of Illinois. Coming in right behind Target is Walmart, with the best prices in 8 states, then comes Grocery Outlet with the most affordable groceries in 6 states.

Other grocery chains that offered up the most affordable prices, according to the NetCredit study:

  • Hy-Vee (5 states)
  • Food Lion (5 states)
  • Price Rite (3 states)
  • Price Chopper (2 states)
  • Save A Lot (2 states)
  • Fiesta Mart (1 state)
  • Smart & Final (1 state)
  • Top Markets (1 state)
  • Super 1 Food (1 state)

I've got to admit that there are several stores on the list that I've never heard of before (looking at you, Price Chopper and Smart & Final), but I am familiar with the store that the study says has the best grocery prices in Illinois.
