Perhaps it's a slight surprise given how much I discuss my all-around ambivalence for camping, fishing, and the outdoors, but I was actually a long-time Scout back in the day. I reached Star Rank before throwing in the towel. And I know a Scouting party is one not to be missed.

AirCamp 2014 is happening this weekend on the grounds of the Chicago-Rockford International Airport. More than 3,800 Scouts already are registered for a gigantic outdoor encampment for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Explorers and their leaders.

The Encampment will feature an Aviation Theme and will display aircraft, STEM activities, traditional Scout activities and an arena show Saturday night featuring the U.S. Navy Rock Band.

Special guest include three of the original Tuskegee Airmen: Virgil Poole, O. Lawton Wilkerson and Hollis Cornelius. Honorary Chairman of the Event is astronaut Jim Lovell, who will speak to the Scouts via video Saturday evening.

AirCamp 2014 is open to all registered Scouts and their families on October 10, 11 and 12. You can find out a whole lot more on the AirCamp website.
