• The snow amount we’ve acquired this winter is not enough to break any records. According to officials, Rockford has compiled 47.2 inches of snow so far this season. That’s only good enough for the 23rd snowiest winter since recording began back in 1905. However, officials say winter is far from over and more accumulation is expected.
  • Today is the last day to register for the March 18 Primary Election. One new aspect to this year’s election is that 17-year-olds can register if they are 18 by the November 4 general election. You can register at your local Clerk or Recorders office by 5pm.
  • Machesney Park residents will get their chance to weigh in on the 5% utility tax imposed by the village last year. Mayor Jerry Bolin says he’s raising the issue of discounting the tax at tonight’s 6pm board meeting. The money raised went to fund road improvements and public safety.
  • An Illinois lawmaker has proposed a penny-per-ounce tax on soft drinks sold in sealed containers in an effort to promote healthier living. A coalition of beverage manufacturers, retailers and union workers are opposing the proposal, saying it would hurt the economy and cost jobs.
  • The official website for Illinois’ health insurance marketplace has hit a major milestone. Officials say almost 440,000 visitors have used the screening tool that directs users to either the federal or state applications for Medicaid, nutrition and income assistance. The website launched on October 1, 2013.
  • Former US Representative Mel Reynolds has been arrested in Zimbabwe. According to officials, he was arrested for allegedly possessing pornographic material and violating immigration laws. The Illinois Democrat resigned from Congress in 1995 after he was convicted of statutory rape, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography.
