• Illinois Lt Governer Evelyn Sanguinetti is at Northern Illinois University today to discuss government consolidation and unfunded mandates. Sanguinetti is the chair of a task force created to find ways to cut waste and reduce the burden of unfunded mandates on the state.  She’ll be meeting with business and academic leaders, faculty, and students. The task force will report is findings to the governor by the end of the year.
  • The state is losing about $500 million per year in tax that it should be collecting to people who buy stuff online and don’t pay.  Republican State Sen. Pam Althoff of McHenry says that internet businesses that don’t have any facilities in Illinois are not required to collect sales tax. The buyers are supposed to pay the tax on their state income tax return, but who knows what compliance is.
  • Deerfield-based Walgreens says it plans to close about 200 U.S. stores. The nation's largest drugstore is expanding a cost-reduction plan it announced last summer. The company says it will also reorganize corporate operations and streamline information technology and other functions.
  • Jersey Mike’s Subs joined with its customers nationwide this March during the 5th Annual “Month of Giving”, raising more than $3 million for 150 different charities.  All profits from sales on March 25th were donated to charity. Locally, the Jersey Mike stores in the Rockford area raised $10-thousand dollars for the Literacy Council.
