Did I ever tell you about the first time I rode the train by myself?

It was an epic disaster. I was heading to the big city of Chicago and after that trip, I promised myself I would never take the train again.

I had heart palpitations worrying about how I didn't have a ticket, even though my husband assured me that the conductor would get me a ticket. Well that was terrible, because the conductor kept ignoring me! He walked past me a million times and never once asked me for my ticket.

I finally flagged him down and said, excuse me I have to pay for a ticket! He said, "I know Lori, it's alright." WHAT!? This guy knew who I was!? Turned out I went to school with him a million years ago and didn't even recognize him now.

I finally got off the train and couldn't find my way out of the train station. I ended up on the 5th floor of some building, where the guy at the information booth made me feel like an idiot. He told me to look for the "big glass doors where the sun is shining on the other side. Then I should put my hand in the air and wave and since I was a pretty girl, maybe a taxi would come pick me up."

I wanted to punch that guy in the nose. Needless to say, I didn't take the train home and asked my husband to come pick me up.

Although I have vowed to never take a train again, I'll absolutely have to make an exception to the rule for these five different train rides from Only In Your State. They are incredibly scenic, memorable and all worth the ride.

I'm sure you remember learning about Pullman cars in history class.
