Illinois store closings

A little over a month back, this major discount retailer with 1,389 locations in 48 states said that they'd be closing up to 40 stores this year, including stores here in Illinois. The closings have begun, but it looks like a lot more than 40 stores will be closing their doors forever.

The way things have been going lately, it might be easier to write about restaurant and retail store chains that aren't thinking about bankruptcy or shutting down multiple stores. We've had a lot of announcements this year, and they don't seem to be slowing down.

In spite of some political leaders claiming that everything is just fine, thousands of "brick and mortar" stores in Illinois and across the country have closed this year, and we're only at the halfway point of 2024. Let's take a look at who's shuttering their stores forever, and who's taking a long, hard look at doing it, too.

You can add Party City and Bath & Body Works to the growing list of companies that are closing stores in order to keep their respective chains afloat. Both companies have stores here in Illinois, but only one of them has announced their plans for those Illinois locations.

After recently announcing that Bed Bath & Beyond would be closing up to 150 stores nationwide and laying off 20 percent of their workforce, company executives have gone to work putting some stores on the chopping block.
