Need something fun to do this Labor Day weekend? Just hop in the car and head to Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin for the annual Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw Festival. (Yes, it is exactly that kind of cow chip).

Only in Wisconsin

As an Illinoisan who spends a lot of time in Wisconsin, I have no problem saying there are several things Wisconsin does way better than many other states;

  1. Making Old Fashioneds and drinking beer.
  2. Opening dive bars in the middle of nowhere.
  3. Finding the fun in weird things...even cow poo.

Did you know Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, throws the biggest, messiest party of the year every Labor Day weekend, and that people travel from all over the state and beyond to attend? It's called the Wisconsin State Cow Chip Throw Festival, and just to be clear, this is the kind of cow chip we're talking about...

(FYI, as chips of cow poo harden, they become odorless, so you don't have to worry about the smell.)

Honestly, I don't know what I enjoy more; the fact that Wisconsinites love to going to a festival to throw cow poo, OR that the festival's 2024 theme is;

The Laughing Stock of Wisconsin for 50 Years

LOL!!!!

The main event of this oddly fabulous Wisconsin festival (August 30 & 31) is obviously the Cow Chip Throw, (and people of all ages and experience levels can participate), but there's plenty of other things the whole herd, aka, family will enjoy doing there too.

The festival is a full-blown celebration of rural Wisconsin life, complete with a parade, a 5k/10k Run/Walk, an arts and crafts fair, live music, plenty of food and drink, a children's game tent, a petting zoo, and more.

If finding a unique way to spend Labor Day weekend was your one goal this summer, ummm, I don't think it can get more unique than throwing cow poo. Just sayin'....
