Snow showers are in the Rockford area forecast for several days in a row, and Arctic air is expected to arrive with dangerously cold temperatures next weekend.

Winter Storm Warnings Being Issued in Wisconsin

A winter storm that has already dumped a large amount of snow in the Dakotas and across the Plains is moving into the upper Midwest region, with parts of Wisconsin already being issued Winter Storm Warnings.

Snow accumulations of up to an inch per hour are possible beginning Tuesday (12/9) in parts of west central Wisconsin, which will be along and north of Interstate 94 through Tuesday evening, according to the NWS.

Freezing Rain, Ice Threat Begins Tuesday Afternoon

For the Rockford area, the current National Weather Service forecast is predicting freezing rain beginning after 3 pm on Tuesday (12/9), and then a rain/snow mix on Tuesday night, with ice accumulation of less than .1 of an inch possible, with little or no snow accumulation expected.

According to the NWS forecast, there's a chance we could see snow accumulation for 4 straight days beginning Tuesday. On Wednesday, there's a 60 percent chance of snow, and another 30 percent chance of snow on Wednesday night.

Thursday (12/11), a 30 percent chance of snow, mainly after noon, with a high around 21, and another 40 percent shot we could see snow on Thursday night, with a low of 6. NWS predicts a "chance of snow" on Friday (12/12), when the high is around 19.

Rockford Weekend Will Go Subzero

Hibernation is the plan for next weekend, if the current forecast for bitter cold holds.

Beginning this Friday night (12/12), the low is forecast to be -4, and the high on Saturday (12/13) is only 6 above zero. Even colder for Saturday night, with a forecast low predicted at -6, before Sunday gets back up to around 12.

If the current long-range forecast from the Weather Channel holds, after the temperature drops below freezing on Wednesday night (12/10), it won't get above 32 degrees again until after December 22.
