After over 13 years of abandonment and vandalization, the old Singer Mental Health Care facility in Rockford, Illinois may finally get demolished.

The History of Singer Mental Health Care Facility in Rockford, Illinois

The Singer Mental Health Care Facility opened in Rockford in the early 1960s and provided critical psychiatric services for Illinois residents for over 50 years.

Rockford's Most Infamous Abandoned Building

Spanning over 100 acres of property, Singer Mental Health Care Facility permanently closed in 2012, primarily due to state budget cuts,  and the last 13 years have not treated it nicely.

As you can see in those pictures, Singer Mental Health Care has been heavily vandalized, and just last week an unexplained fire blazed in one of the building's old elevator shafts.

Singer was once an important resource for the Rockford community, but now it is a horribly dangerous eyesore that needed to come down years ago, and soon it finally might be.

Will Singer Mental Health Care Be Demolished?

According to WIFR;

As part of the “Surplus to Success” plan within his proposed Fiscal Year 2026 Budget, Gov. JB Pritzker wants the state to invest $300 million to remediate and repurpose state-owned sites.

The proposed budget lists 5 specific sites throughout Illinois that need attention, and Rockford's Singer Mental Health Care Facility is one of them.  If approved, the State would make the entire property "shovel ready" for new large businesses to develop, which would in turn bring in more revenue to the Rockford community.

It certainly looks like Singer's days are numbered, but how long will it be until the wrecking ball arrives in Rockford? I'm guessing at least 2 years...hopefully I'm wrong.
