A Deputy Sheriff responding to another incident in Rockford runs into a man in the street who just happened to have active warrants.

Traffic Stop and Crash in Rockford Leads to Multiple Arrests

According to a press release from the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, Deputies were attempting to stop a vehicle on Wednesday afternoon (1/22) near the Auburn and Avon Street intersection when the individual fled from the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as James Richardson, 63, of Rockford, fled from the deputy around 3 pm, according to the report. The deputy chose not to pursue Richardson’s vehicle.

Shortly afterward, deputies were alerted to a crash at the intersection of Auburn and Central involving the same vehicle.

Man Runs Into Roadway, Struck By Sheriffs Vehicle

As deputies responded to the crash, a pedestrian, Daniel Sinclair, ran into the roadway and was struck by a responding deputy’s vehicle. The deputy remained at the scene to render aid, and Sinclair was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

The Rockford Police Department investigated the pedestrian incident and discovered that Sinclair had an active warrant in Winnebago County for retail theft.

After his release from the hospital, Sinclair was taken into custody and booked into the county jail, according to the press release.

Suspect Who Fled Arrested After Crashing Vehicle

At the crash scene, deputies located Richardson’s vehicle. Richardson sustained minor injuries, was treated at a local hospital, and was then taken into custody.

After reviewing the case, the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized several charges against Richardson, including aggravated fleeing, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license.

The charges against Richardson are accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, according to the Winnebago County Sheriff's press release.
