Illinois EPA Extends EV Rebate Program Deadline, Shifts Focus to Low-Income Applicants
The Illinois EPA is extending its EV Rebate Program deadline while refocusing incentives on low-income residents amid available FY26 funding.
Illinois EPA Extends EV Rebate Application Cycle
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has extended the current Electric Vehicle (EV) Rebate Program application cycle, giving residents more time to apply for financial incentives aimed at growing EV adoption across the state.
Acting Illinois EPA Director James Jennings announced the deadline has been pushed from January 31, 2026, to May 31, 2026, citing sustained fuding levels and continued public interest.
How Applications Will Be Processed
According to the press release, EPA will process all applications received through January 31, 2026, including those from non-low-income applicants who applied under the original expectations of the program.
After that date, the agency will again prioritize low-income applicants, in line with program rules outlined on the Illinois EPA EV Rebate Program webpage. Updated application forms and instructions are now available online.
Funding and Legislative Changes
The Illinois General Assembly allocated $14 million to the EV Rebate Program for Fiscal Year 2026, which runs through June 30, 2026.
According to the Illinois EPA, current applications represent only a fraction of the available funds. Jennings said legislative changes enacted in 2025 have helped preserve funding while targeting residents with the greatest financial need.
Key Eligibility and Rebate Updates
Program updates include a $2000 rebate for eligible new or used electric vehicles, with low-income applicants eligible for an additional $2000.

Vehicles must have a sale price under $80,000, and applicants now have 180 days from purchase to apply. Only Illinois residents purchasing from licensed dealerships are eligible, and ownership must be retained for at least 12 months.
What Residents Should Know
Rebates are issued as funding allows, and eligibility is governed by the EV Rebate Act and Illinois EPA rules.
