What’s Closed in Illinois on National Day of Mourning for Jimmy Carter?
Thursday, January 9, 2025 has been declared a National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, but what does this mean for businesses and services throughout Illinois?
Jimmy Carter's Legacy
I must admit that my knowledge about Jimmy Carter as a President is limited because I was a tiny baby when he was in office, but I do know that popular opinion is not great.
Plainly put, Jimmy Carter is beloved for all the good he did AFTER he served as President, and that is what the entire nation will be honoring on January 9, 2025.
An executive order issued by President Biden upon Jimmy Carter's death on December 29, 2024 proclaimed January 9, 2025 a National Day of Mourning for the United States and also said;
I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.
Illinois Closures for National Day of Mourning
Besides taking time to honor Jimmy Carter and his legacy on January 9, many services and offices will be closed throughout Illinois. Here are a few of the major ones:
- Regular United States Postal Service deliveries, retail locations, and offices will be suspended. (limited package deliveries will still take place)
- Nasdaq will close all of its equities and options markets.
- All federal offices and courts will be closed.
Along with proclaiming Thursday, January 9, 2025 a National Day of Mourning, President Biden has also declared all American flags should be flown at half-staff through Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at sunset.
President Carter's funeral services will be televised on national networks and cables services, to see the full schedule of events on January, 9, 2025, click here.
