Need a fun way to get in the Halloween spirit that doesn't involve going to a haunted house and getting chased down by ghouls? Just hop in the car and drive by some of these awesome Halloween houses in Northern Illinois.

Family-Friendly Halloween Fun in Illinois

Kids LOVE Halloween, but if you have young kids, many of the Halloween attractions in the area can be a little too scary. Yes, many haunted houses offer family-friendly hours when actors aren't present, BUT what else can you do for some Halloween fun?

Obviously, taking them to local trunk-or-treats is always a great option, but another thing my family likes to do is drive around and look for cool Halloween houses. Luckily, there are several in Northern Illinois you need to put on your must-see list!

Cool Halloween Houses in Northern Illinois

My family is very much the see-scary-stuff-from-a-distance kind of people and one house we always like to drive by during the Halloween season is this one in Freeport, Illinois...

My kids enjoy seeing the decorations at the Freeport house so much that they have now requested to drive by more this year...so...where should we go?

WGN in Chicago has complied a massive list of cool Halloween houses to see all over Chicago, the suburbs, and beyond, and these 4 aren't too far from home...

Brayton Knolls Haunt - 633 Courtney Ln, Marengo, IL

Brayton Knolls Haunt's Facebook says the experience is "a haunted garage complete with live actors and electric, pneumatic, static, and video props. We are kid friendly but since this is a haunted garage, things will jump out, lights will flash, and some sounds will be loud."

Last Stop Cemetery - 427 West Hurlbut Avenue, Belvidere, IL

This home's decorations span over a couple of yards and is visited by hundreds of people every Halloween season.

CarnEvil of Terror Cemetery -   1701 Rogers Avenue, McHenry, IL

This experience is more than just yard decorations, the homeowners told WGN; "Weekends have live scare actors, and we pass out homemade cookies, popcorn and drinks to enjoy, along with kids games and prizes."

Pirates at Shipwreck Cove -  112 North Ronda Road, McHenry, IL,

WGN's article says; "We have a sinking pirate ship that has had a run-in with a Kraken. In the evening, all of our lighting is done with flickering candle lights. Visitors are welcome to come walk our ‘pier sidewalk’ and look at the pirates on the front porch"
