Why Rockford Families Love This Enchanting Winter Lights Experience
If you’re looking for a holiday night out in Rockford that feels like stepping straight into a storybook, there’s one winter experience that absolutely glows above the rest. Before I even tell you its name, picture this: thousands of white lights, dramatic up-lighting on every twist of the path, and colors so vivid I honestly think someone invented new shades just for December. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen in Rockford.
A Stunning Winter Walk Through the Gardens

This year’s winter lights event, Illuminated, returns beginning Thursday, December 4, 2025, transforming the grounds into a completely new world of light and color. From December 4–14, it’s open Thursday through Sunday, then shifts to nightly openings December 18–January 4, with last admission at 7:45 p.m.
Fireside Comforts, Local Food, and Holiday Favorites
Made-to-order woodfire pizza is served every night, Rockford Roasting Company is back with hot chocolate in the Garden Pavilion, and Sassy Mac Boys will be parked on-site nightly with warm, comfort food. Inside the Visitor Center, you can enjoy fireside dining along with beer, wine, and soda… perfect for warming up between strolls.
Holiday Storytime for Families
On Sunday evenings leading up to Christmas, enjoy fireside readings of The Night Before Christmas at 6:15 and 7:15. Parking is free, and a shuttle from the UIC College of Medicine runs Friday and Saturday nights for easy access.
