Soda, pop, Coke, whatever you want to call it, it exploded.

It's no secret: we've had some nasty bouts of negative temperatures so far this winter, along with snow, ice, and frigid conditions overall.

It's led to viral moments like this.

On December 30th, 2025, Glen Ellyn resident Matthew Thomas Jones was making an early morning stop at a grocery store as part of his work for a cookie company. As he was walking near a pallet of Coca-Cola bottles, he heard popping sounds and explosions.

Jones got out his phone to send his godson in Australia a Snapchat of the bottles.

He thinks it was 10 degrees outside that morning and, if you turn the volume up, you can hear him narrating it to his godson.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like Illinois will be done with snow and cold weather just yet. The Farmer's Almanac advises residents to keep an eye on a tough round of possible winter weather in March. Some of Illinois' coldest periods will be late January, early February, and mid-March.

There's also the possibility for a snowstorm at the end of January or early February.

But, there's another bit of good news for this winter. On the whole, the country's warmer-than-normal winter trend is also part of the forecast for the Lower Lakes area (which includes most of Illinois). So hopefully there's no more ground stops at Midway and O'Hare.
