3 Sodas in Illinois are Now Banned Forever
There were rumors that this was coming and now it's official. There are at least 3 sodas widely available in Illinois up until now that have been banned forever thanks to the Food and Drug Administration.
I saw Ars Technica break the news that the FDA has now issued a long-awaited ban on a soda additive that is "no longer considered safe" according to their report. The ingredient in question is Brominated vegetable oil (BVO). What the FDA says is their "final rule" was just issued yesterday on July 3, 2024. It says "The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or we) is amending our regulations to revoke the authorization for the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food."
The Today Show says there are 3 sodas available in Illinois that have continued to use BVO up until today and they are the following:
Sun Drop
Orangette from Walmart
Orange Soda from Giant Foods
You can expect that these 3 sodas (my wife still calls them "pop") will be removed from store shelves soon once the Food and Drug Administration ruling is officially put in place. The statement by the FDA says this will be August 2, 2024. After that date, stores in Illinois will no longer be allowed to sell these products.
