Some parts of Illinois state government have really been taking it on the chin from the bad guys in cyberspace. On the heels of cyber attacks on the Illinois Attorney General's Office and the Illinois Department of Employment Security, comes word of trouble for the Illinois State Police (ISP).

So What Happened?

Last Thursday, the ISP confirmed that their FOID (Firearm Owners Identification) card portal had been hit with a cyber attack, and that about 2,000 Illinoisans who have FOID cards may have had their information compromised:

Out of necessity, some of the online account parameters put in place for ease of use and convenience years ago have been appropriately modified and tightened to prevent unauthorized users from attempting to further expand the extent of the identify fraud.

The ISP news release points out that they're reaching out to those 2,000 FOID card holders who may have had their personal info stolen. In addition to getting in touch with those who may find that their information has been compromised, the ISP says that they have strengthened their online security requirements and are limiting the use and access of personal information that FOID card applicants submit in their online FOID account. Some of that information could match Illinois resident personal identification information unlawfully obtained from any number of previous cyber breaches.

Illinois State Government Has Been Getting Hit This Year

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said in an interview last week that his office, crippled in a massive ransomware attack back in April, has spent over $2.5 million in taxpayer money to rebuild systems, get the office back online, and notify those who may have had their information stolen during the attack. A similar issue is also plaguing the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).
