Are you planning to hand out holiday tips this year?

If so, you're in the majority. According to a survey of more than 1,400 adults by Care.com, about 70% of Americans say they plan to make sure others know they’re grateful for service during the past year.

The main reasons non-tippers give are that they can’t afford to tip (41%) or believe holiday tips aren’t necessary (34%).

So how much is an appropriate amount? Here's a selection of suggestions from Marketwatch.com:

  • Hairstylist: $50 or $100 or a gift

  • Barber: Up to the cost of a haircut or a gift

  • Teacher: Gift card or gift certificate for up to $25, or pitch in with some of the other parents and buy a more expensive gift certificate

  • Day care provider: $20 to $70 each, plus a small gift from your child

  • Babysitter: An evening’s pay, plus a gift from your child

  • Massage therapist: Up to the cost of one session or a gift

  • Mail carrier: Small gift or gift card up to $20

  • Newspaper carrier: $10 to $30

Are you planning to tip any or all of your service providers this month?
