Veterans Day, for me, always brings on memories of my dad, Jake. Jake was a decorated WWII veteran, and my hero. He was generally quiet about his military service, describing what he did during World War II as "just doing my part, like everybody else did." I asked him once, on Veterans Day, if there was anything special that he would like, or if there was there anything I could do for him. "Go rake the leaves," was his response.

For all you veterans out there, the very least we, those you protect, can do is say thank you. That doesn't mean that there aren't lots of free meals, deals, discounts, and sales earmarked for veterans today.

Rather that run down the history of Veterans Day (formerly Armistice Day), I'd rather share this with you:

Got a veteran living near you? Go rake the leaves for them. My dad appreciated that.
