A historic school building will be rubble by the end of the day.

MyStateline - Demolition of Walker Elementary School will start Tuesday. The school, built in 1911, closed for good after the 2015-2016 school year.

I realize that old buildings can't stay around forever. Eventually, building codes and general cost of upkeep eventually outweigh keeping the historic edifices open but this is kind of sad.

I went to school at Harlem High. It was built in the late 70s so when I was there it was just kind of an outdated "modern" school. They have since remodeled and added on but it still has that kind of look. I was always a little jealous of some of the RPS kids who got to go to school in these old museums. Now I'm sure they were jealous of the fact that I got to go to school in a place that had air conditioning but when you're 16 you don't think of things like that.

The land where Walker Elementary used to sit will be transferred over to the park district. There are no plans on what to do with the property at this time.
