We've been keeping a close eye on the continuing discussion about the future of Exelon's nuclear power plants in Illinois. This interview from 2014 outlines the problems the nearby Byron plant and others around the state currently are having.

Chicago Tribune energy reporter Julie Wernau joined the show again last week to discuss her story about a state plan to help Illinois nuclear plants:

Illinois governmental agencies Wednesday issued a report proposing ways to prop up Exelon's ailing nuclear power plants, citing the economic and environmental impact that closing those plants could have on the state.

The agencies suggested programs and taxes that would punish electric generators that burn carbon-based fuels and produce carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. Exelon's nuclear plants don't emit greenhouse gases.

There was good news for the Byron plant in the report. Past stories indicated it might have been on the "shut down" list, due to under performing others in Illinois. However, the analysis here indicates the three plants in the most trouble for Exelon are Quad Cities, Dresden, and Clinton.
