My late friend, Rick, and I were discussing aliens one day. "Why is it," Rick wanted to know, "that when we hear that aliens have visited someplace, it's never on the campus of MIT or Stanford, where the scientists are? It's always two goofs shining for nightcrawlers in Soggy Crotch, Georgia that get to meet the ETs!"

That made me laugh. Soggy Crotch, Georgia, that is, not the fact that extra-terrestrial beings skipped a campus get-together. And, no, there's no listing for a city or town in Georgia named Soggy Crotch. Yet.

However, all states have some pretty strange town names, our own state of Illinois included.

  • Lowpoint
  • Perks
  • Ransom
  • Muddy
  • Preemption
  • Mineral
  • Normal

Okay, not all-that-weird, right? Things get stranger from here with places in Illinois like:

  • Goofy Ridge
  • Media
  • Hometown
  • Hooppole
  • Joppa
  • Golf
  • Oblong
  • Bones Gap
  • Cerro Gordo (it means "fat hill")
  • La Place ("We have no creative people!")
  • La Prairie ( much classier that "The Prairie")

We've got weirdly named places from coast-to-coast:
