If you are a frequent shopper of Schnucks stores here in the Stateline, the ambiance is going to be quite different this holiday season without the familiar ringing of the Salvation Army's bells.

Schnucks recently announced that they will no longer allow any solicitation at their stores nationwide, and this has many organizations feeling a loss. Here in Rockford, the news particularly hurts for Northern Illinois Girl Scout Troops and the Salvation Army who have always seen big fundraising numbers at local Schnucks stores.

I do understand that some people find solicitation at stores to be annoying, I also get why Schnucks needs to put their customers' satisfaction first, but I always felt that allowing these organizations to be in their shores showed commitment to the communities they serve. Obviously I was wrong. What do you think?

One last thing, here's a date to mark on your calendar now because it looks like the Salvation Army will really need our help this holiday season...the annual 12 Hours of Salvation Army Toy Drive at the Lou Bachrodt Automall is set for Friday, December 9, 2016. Hope to see you there so we can make a huge difference for needy kids in our community!
