Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is a frequent guest with "RIley & Scot" and we've often discussed the Unclaimed Property Auctions that his offices organizes. This week another auction is underway with a number of interesting items. Rutherford says:

“Our vaults are filled to capacity and I encourage Illinois residents to explore the items available in this auction. Please visit our website, www.treasurer.il.gov, to discover the jewelry, coins, and stamps that are available for purchase.  There is something for everyone.  The auction opens at 10 this morning and will continue to run throughout the week.  It will begin to shut down on Friday, September 12 at 10 a.m.”

Where does all the stuff come from? Well. it’s common for people to lose track of some assets when they move or when loved ones pass away. Businesses and banks are required to turn over unclaimed accounts to the treasurer’s office. After a period of time where the office attempts to track down the rightful owners, the property enters the auction.
