ROCKTON, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say a 58-year-old Rockton woman was killed trying to save vehicles from a burning garage at her home.

Anita Specht was found dead in a vehicle following the Thursday blaze. A spokesman for the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office says Specht was able to get one vehicle out of the garage and was trapped while trying to back out a second vehicle.

Her husband, Edward, suffered second-degree burns and smoke inhalation. He was taken to a Rockford hospital, where he was in serious condition Thursday night.

The sheriff's office is conducting a death investigating, while the state fire marshal is determining the cause of the fire.

The couple's three-story house was deemed a total loss. Damage caused by the blaze is estimated at $700,000.
