ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — The Rockford Police Department plans to hire about 30 new officers by January to round out a force of 290 officers.

The Rockford Register Star reports seven recruits joined the department this month, bringing the force to 267 officers. The assistant deputy chief says the department aims to hire 15 officers in September and another group in January to fully reach its authorized size.

The department has been trying to increase the size of its police force since 2012. That's when the city lifted a nearly four-year hiring freeze. The department hasn't hired officers quickly enough to make up for retirements and attrition until now.
