One person is dead after a Thursday night shooting in Rockford.

According to a press release, officers responded to the 1000 block of 17th Street just before 7 p.m. in reference to a shooting in the back alley. Information was then provided that the incident involved a residence in the 1000 block of 16th Street and that there was a shooting victim located there.

The Rockford Fire Department located 35-year-old Vernon S. Ross, who was suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital with a life threatening injury where he later died. Officers were advised that a second individual, a 24-year-old male, arrived at the same hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

An investigation revealed that a verbal altercation occurred at the residence on 16th Street, which later turned into a physical altercation, followed by shots being fired.
