It seems as if there's always someone out there looking to take your money. And not even the solemn occasion of Memorial Day will slow them down.

In fact, the Rockford Regional Office of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning that the holiday is a perfect opportunity for scammers to take advantage of both active duty service members and elderly veterans. The BBB is reminding everyone to do the research before giving money to military discount programs and charities.

Dennis Horton, director of the Rockford Regional Office of the Better Business Bureau:

“Donating to a charity is a wonderful way to support the families of fallen soldiers, sailors and airmen. However, there are scammers who dishonor our military by ripping consumers off. It’s important to be cautious before giving money to organizations or individuals who claim to be affiliated with the military.”

A few examples of these scams include military loans, military charities, rental properties, life insurance policies, and car sales.

We've also found that Charity Navigator is a great site to check if you want to make sure your money is being spent wisely by any charity.
