An old Rock River rail bridge is getting a makeover and it looks like it might almost be finished.

According to an Instagram post from Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey, the new pedestrian bridge is "coming along nicely."

The Rockford Register Star first reported on the project in April saying, "The bridge will be a means for thousands of weekend fans attending tournaments at the Sports Factory to cross to the west side of the river, near the site of a proposed $67 million Embassy Suites Hotel and the south end of Davis Park, where in coming years will turn a pasture-like expanse into 5.4 acres of active and passive recreation."

In case you were wondering, WIFR says "About half of the $1.5 million project is being paid for through a “Rails to Trails” transportation enhancement grant - fairly self-explanatory - motor fuel taxes soak up the rest."

While no completion date has yet to be announced, it appears safe to speculate that the bridge will be open to the public very soon.
