With four months to go until Election Day, we have another look at the race for Governor from Reboot Illinois and We Ask America. The latest results have good news for Bruce Rauner:

A new Reboot Illinois poll, the first conducted since Rauner’s approach to state taxes was unveiled and thoroughly reported, shows the Republican adding to his lead by 4 percentage points while also winning over voters with his proposal to reduce the income tax and expand the state sales tax.

The numbers say Rauner leads Pat Quinn by 14 points, 47% to 33%. However, pollsters explained to voters each respective candidate's plan on taxes and the budget Rauner's lead increased to 47% to 31%.

  • Rauner leads by 31 points among independents (52%-21%). Quinn's support among independents dropped eight points in one month.
  • Rauner wins men by 23 points (52%-29%) and even has the support of Illinois women by 7 points (43%-36%). Thus the Democrats’ suport for the ”birth control” ballot question in November.
  • Pat Quinn has a huge lead in the city of Chicago (59%-18%). That’s not a surprise. But Rauner has an slight lead in suburban Cook County (42%-40%) and crushes the incumbent in the collar counties (55%-28%) and downstate (57%-19%).
  • By a margin of 42% to 31%, voters say Bruce Rauner's tax and budget plan is more likely to produce a balanced budget.
The number of undecided voters has increased by about five percentage points since June, and it appears most of them were Quinn supporters who perhaps are giving Bruce Rauner a fresh look.
This, of course, is good news for Bruce Rauner. While he didn't increase his percentage of support, he did maintain and expand a double-digit lead. There's a long way to go until November, but if Rauner can project some sense of inevitability over the next few months it might serve to suck the enthusiasm out of Quinn supporters and Democrats in general. That, in turn, could help Jim Oberweis in his U.S. Senate race and even perhaps state House and Senate candidates too.
