Any World War II buffs or even general history aficionados will want to head down to the Rockford Airport for an incredible opportunity to see and touch a part of the country's past.

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine” WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft” WWII Heavy Bomber and P-51 Mustang fighter all will be at the Chicago/Rockford International Airport now until July 18. The B-17 is one of only eight in flying condition in the United States, while the B-24J and Full Dual Control P-51C Mustang are the sole remaining examples of their type flying in the World.

Hours of ground tours and display are 2:00 PM through 5:00 PM on Wednesday, 9:00 AM through 5:00 PM on Thursday, and 9:00 AM through 12:00 PM on Friday, July 18. It's part of the Wings Of Freedom Tour, put on by The Collings Foundation, which is a non-profit educational foundation devoted to organizing “living history” events that allow people to learn more about their heritage and history through direct participation.

To that end, visitors are invited to explore the aircraft inside and out. Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12 for access to up-close viewing and tours through the inside of the aircraft. However, any World War II Veterans can tour through the aircraft at no cost.
