As if police officers don't do enough to keep us safe, one Freeport K-9 officer continued his work Friday morning even though he was off-duty.

According to our news partners at Eyewitness News, the Stephenson County Sheriff's Office reports an off-duty officer was able to rescue an elderly couple trapped in their burning home in the 300 block of East Center Road in Rock City:

An off-duty Freeport K-9 officer also heard to call and went to the scene to assist, went into the home, and helped the elderly couple escape through a window.

Flames quickly engulfed the home, which fire officials say is a total loss.

Eywitness News reports the Orangeville, Freeport Rural, German Valley, Davis and Dakota Fire Departments all assisted. The cause of the blaze currently is unknown.

The name of the off-duty hero has not yet been released. Even though the officer probably doesn't want the attention, it would be great to find out and congratulate him or her on a job well done!
