The Ogle County Sheriff is putting out a warning about a new phone scam that is sweeping the area.

The scam is fraudulently using the name "Disabled Police and Sheriffs Foundation" in their solicitation. The sheriff adds that the number appears to be from Illinois but it actually is not.

Ogle County warns that the group is not registered in Illinois and are not associated with any Illinois Sheriff of legitimate police organization in Illinois. Anyone receiving a call like this should just hang up.

They also would like to remind you of your right to the following information when dealing with any charity looking for a donation.

  • The name, address and phone number of the organization for which they are soliciting.
  • The name, address and phone number of the telemarketing firm.
  • The percentage of every dollar paid to the telemarketing firm.
  • Insist on something in writing prior to making a pledge or commitment.

Above all just be vigilant when dealing with anyone on the phone especially now around the holidays.
