Officials with MercyRockford Health System have unveiled plans for a massive expansion project in Rockford.

The provider, formed by the merger of Mercy Health System and Rockford Health System in January of 2015, will set out to construct a second campus on 263 acres at the intersection of East Riverside Boulevard and Interstate 90. The proposal includes the continuing of operations at the hospital campus on its current N. Rockton Avenue site.

Javon R. Bea is MercyRockford Health System President and CEO:

“MercyRockford Health System is embarking on the most exciting and impactful health care development in the 130 years since our two original hospitals were founded. This is the largest project ever in Rockford’s history and represents a leap forward in quality facilities, community economic growth and easy access from a large regional area. We are expanding existing services and keeping patients close to home, creating jobs, and bringing strong economic growth to the greater Rockford region.”

According to a press release, the Rockton Avenue campus will concentrate services into facilities that have been recently renovated. MercyRockford plans to centralize intensive care services and construct a destination campus on I-90. In addition, a state-of-the-art Women’s and Children’s Hospital is planned for the campus.

The estimated cost of the plan to develop the two campuses for the future is about $400 million.
