McHenry County Courthouse Work Finishes Over Budget
WOODSTOCK, Ill. (AP) — Unexpected costs during restoration of a suburban McHenry County courthouse have pushed the total price tag for the project to more than $1 million.
The Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake reports the restoration of the roof and dome at the Old Courthouse in Woodstock originally was expected to cost about $775,000.
Woodstock City Manager Roscoe Stelford says the added cost was required to ensure the courthouse lasts for years.
Stelford says he is "happy that the roof is done" and expects it to last well beyond his lifetime.
Decrepit gutters are just the latest problem the restoration has faced during since work began.
Contractors found rotted roofing materials during the early months of the project.
The Old Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
