The Marengo City Council has agreed to move forward with a proposal for developing a quarry.

The Northwest Herald reports it happened after the developer assured the Marengo City Council this week that the operation would be safe and out of sight:

Prairie Material Aggregate owns the quarry to the south of where Super Aggregates wants to build a quarry, City Administrator Gary Boden said Tuesday, and there are a few other quarries around that area.

Operations of the quarry would be set back from the road, and trees and berms around the property would make it “so it wouldn’t be visually noticeable from any direction to speak of,” Jack Pease, owner of Super Aggregates, said.

As part of his plan, Pease is asking the city to annex 80 acres of land. The plan is to extract sand and gravel with a dredge over the next 20 to 30 years. The city of Marengo would get property and sales taxes from the site.

A public hearing still needs to be held before final approval.
