I don't have to remind you that Rockford is near or at the top of the list for unemployment in Illinois. As we've said recently on the show, our area tends to be among the first to slide into economic problems and among the last to climb out. That means there's a large need for assistance in our community and the Northern Illinois Food Bank is one of the great organizations that help make it happen.

Now, thanks to Walmart, their work has become just a little bit easier.

As you can see in the picture, the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program has donated $150,000 to Northern Illinois Food Bank. The Food Bank says they'll use the money to purchase a new refrigerated truck and six assorted pallet jacks.

Food Bank officials say they provide food to more than 60,000 people each week across 13 counties in Northern Illinois. Last year, they provided the equivalent of 42 million meals to those in need.

In 2013, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation awarded more than $35.6 million in cash and in-kind donations to local organizations across Illinois. You can find out more about the program online at Walmart Foundation's website.
